SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities: Music Building Addition

SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities
Greenville, SC

The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities is a public residential high school for artistically talented students from across the state. This school gives young artists the opportunity to receive pre-professional training in music, dance, drama, visual arts, and creative writing. Nestled behind Falls Park in scenic downtown Greenville, students live and learn in an immersive environment.

DP3 Architects provided services for the SC Governor’s School Music Building Addition. This addition includes seven practice rooms, a large ensemble room, a large rehearsal room, a group percussion room, four teaching music studios, instrument storage, restrooms, and mechanical and electrical spaces. The addition seamlessly connects directly to the existing building for ease of transition and maintains breathtaking views of the adjacent Falls Park.

Architectural acoustic design was critical for this project given the function of these spaces. Variables like reverberation, sound reflection, and loudness levels all must be considered when crafting musical environments.

The Governor’s School is a special place to inspire young minds, perfect their craft, and then launch into the world. Our hope is that this music building addition is both functional for the school and creates an environment for students to thrive.
